Jacob Desmond, a survivor of the October 2020 Lekki Toll Plaza shooting, has been arrested by the Lagos police for ‘breach of order’.

In a video making the rounds on social media, Desmond was seen speaking with newsmen at a gathering that was held to commemorate the second year anniversary of the monumental protests on Thursday, about how he was lucky to have survived the shootings by soldiers on October 20, 2020.

Desmond, presumed to be a dispatch rider with Jumia Foods, stated that he was grateful to be alive on the second anniversary of the protesters’ deaths.

“This same place, this same toll gate, we lost so many lives. I was among those who should have been killed,” Desmond said.

“I am just so grateful because I should have been among those that died that day.”

The dispatch rider had dropped to his knees in tears when he was dragged away by two policemen into a waiting black maria.

One of the policemen who dragged Desmond away could be identified from his name tag as ‘A.S Yasuwa.’

In the early hours of Thursday, protesters gathered at the Lekki Toll Plaza to commemorate the genocide where scores of Nigerian youths protesting police brutality were killed exactly two years ago.

There have also been reports of Nigerians being shot at and sprayed ‘acid water’ by uniformed men in what is clearly a peaceful procession by protesters.

While reacting to the video, Benjamin Hundeyin, Public Relations Officer of the Lagos State Police Command, said his men “never had physical contact with any of the protesters at the plaza”.

“There was no use of baton, neither was there physical contact. We equally do not have any record of shooting. We would, however, appreciate evidence of gunshots, maybe a video, to enable us take appropriate action,” he wrote via his official Twitter handle on Thursday.
