The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency has arrested a father who physically assaulted his son in Lagos over his failure to recite some verses in the Quran.
The agency did not give the name of the assaulter and the victim in a Twitter post on Saturday.
It explained that the man’s arrest followed “a report from a mandated reporter of an 11-year-old male who was physically assaulted by his father”. The boy’s offence, according to the agency, was his inability to “recite the Quran”.

The man had seriously assaulted the teenager, leading to some health complications on the victim, such as “hematuria, 2 episodes of sudden loss of consciousness, bleeding from the ears and nostrils”.
The perpetrator is detained at Meiran Divisional Police Station, “whilst the child is receiving medical attention facilitated by the Ministry of Health and the Lagos State Primary Health Care Board”.
Umar, an official of the agency who responded to FIJ’s inquiry, said he was not in a position to provide the father’s name because he had little knowledge of it.
Meanwhile, the organisation recently published names of sex offenders convicted in the state and documented their information in the register of sex offenders created by the Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency Law.
