Four South African police officers have been arrested for brutally assaulting a Nigerian.

According to Briefly.co.za, an online South African newspaper, the incident happened on January 9 when the unnamed Nigerian, who was in the company of his friends, was stopped and asked to produce his identification document.

When the Nigerian could not produce an original copy of the document the officers demanded to see, they transported him to the Boksburg North Police Station and repeatedly beat him.

The victim was in a coma for nine days as a result of the heavy beating he suffered in the hands of the officers.

After receiving the information, the Nigerian Embassy in South Africa notified the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) unit of the incident.

The IPID investigated the matter and then arrested the officers involved on February 1.

According to Lizzy Suping, IPID spokesperson, the officers face charges of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm and defeating the ends of justice.

The arrested officers will make their first appearance in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court on February 3.
