Aisha Buhari, the wife of President Muhammadu Buhari, has alleged that a post claiming that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) had resolved to recirculate old N500 and N1,000 notes was published on her Instagram and Facebook pages in error.

Via her official Instagram handle, Aisha, on Tuesday afternoon, disowned the now-deleted post, and dubbed it “the criminal actions of the person(s) who were responsible for deleting quite a number of my posts since 2018 to late last year”.

She asked law enforcement agencies to “find out who I am sharing my social media handles with” and said it would be the last time she would be disclaiming fake news.

This post came one hour after the CBN, in a statement signed by Edward Adamu, its deputy governor, corporate services; and Osita Nwanisobi, director, corporate communications; said it was working with law enforcement agencies to “investigate, apprehend and prosecute the purveyors of this fake news”.

The CBN’s statement read in part, “The attention of the Central Bank of Nigeria has been drawn to a fake press release purported to have emanated from the Bank to the effect that President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the reissuance and release of old N500 and N1000 notes as legal tender in the country.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the Central Bank of Nigeria reiterates that in line with the directives of Mr. President, only N200 old notes are to be reissued and to circulate concurrently with the new notes. Members of the public are therefore advised to ignore this fake news.”

Social media was in a frenzy on Tuesday morning after the president’s wife posted a fake CBN statement on her social media platforms claiming the president and the CBN met on Monday night and resolved to recirculate the old N500 and N1000 notes.

This is not Aisha’s first time accusing someone of manipulating her Instagram account. FIJ earlier reported how, in November 2022, she assaulted Zainab Kassim, her ex-aide, for allegedly deleting a post on her Instagram handle.
