Abdullah Arogundade, a resident of Jos, has narrated how Guaranty Trust Bank failed to refund the N166,000 deduction made from his account.

Speaking with FIJ, Arogundade said the deduction was made when he tried to pay for his brother’s IELTS exams.

He stated that he had wanted to pay the sum of N83,000 for the exams on October 23, 2022, through his GTB MasterCard but the transaction was declined. He then initiated the transaction the second time, but it was also declined.

“My brother had to source for the money elsewhere and paid through Zenith Bank since the payment I tried to make was unsuccessful,” he said.

He further told FIJ that he contacted MOD IELTS, the franchise holder of IELTS, to inform them that payment had been made but no confirmation.

Arogundade got a shocker when his account was debited twice five days after.

“I got two debit alerts on October 28, 2022, for the transaction I initiated on October 23 for my brother’s IELTS exams, which didn’t go through at the time,” he said.

“I reached out to MOD IELTS again, explaining what had happened.

“I got confirmation that the company’s online merchant for third-party transactions, PayU, received N83,000 twice on October 28, 2022.”

He further told FIJ he had to travel to MOD IELTS’s branch in Lagos and Abuja to explain to them what had happened and demand a refund.

“I was told that PayU would authorise a chargeback to GTB for a refund and the bank would refund the money to my account.”

He noted that PayU notified him that the chargeback had been done and instructed him to reach out to GTB.

He said he contacted GTB several times and went to the bank’s branch in Jos to complain but nothing was done.

“I’ve visited the GTB branch on Ahmadu Bello Way and British Junction here in Jos countless times since the incident,” he said.

“They kept logging in the complaint into their portal every time, yet my money has not been refunded.

“The traditional timeframe does not also seem to end.”

FIJ contacted GTB through its customer support line and one of its email addresses, but the bank had not responded at press time.
