Muhammed Gambo, a Taraba State-based tailor, has shared how N32,000 was deducted from his First City Monument Bank (FCMB) account without his authorisation.

Gambo told FIJ the fraudulent transaction occurred on February 22, 2023, after he received a series of codes and onetime passwords.

He said the FCMB told him there was nothing they could do when he lodged a complaint about the incident at a Jalingo branch.

He explained that on February 15, a few days before the unauthorised transaction, an unknown person hacked his Facebook account with a strange phone number: 08167453289.

Gambo said he suspected the person had used the phone number to hack his email account, which gave the person an opportunity to access his mobile app.

“On February 22, I received a text from my bank with a verification code, requesting me to register an account for FCMB new mobile, but I ignored it,” he said.

“I later got a onetime password (OTP) sent as a message, and less than 10 minutes after that, a code was sent to me to authorise a debit transaction of N32,000 from my account.

“I refused to compromise, yet I got another message stating that another OTP had been generated for confirmation of fingerprints for transactions. Not long after that, the strange transaction was approved, and I got a debit alert.”

The tailor said he visited an FCMB branch adjacent Zenith Bank in Jalingo that same day but a customer care agent said there was nothing they could do about it.

“I was able to block my account and launch a mobile app, but my account is still under pressure because the unknown person keeps trying my account for withdrawal,” he said.

On Wednesday, FIJ contacted the FCMB on social media for comments but they did not respond.

Several phone calls put across to the bank were also not responded to.
