Lawrence Imasagbon, a resident of Lagos, has narrated how Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB) debited him for a fund transfer without crediting the recipient.

Imasagbon told FIJ he had done all he could for GTB to refund his money but the bank would not do so.

He said his problem with GTB started on December 8, 2022, after he paid N50,000 using his GTB mobile app for his organisation’s value-added tax via eTranzact.

At his end, Imasagbon said, the transaction was successful, but his boss informed him the following day that the payment did not reflect on the company’s profile on the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) portal.

To get the problem resolved, Imasagbon said, he went to a GTB branch in Opebi, Ikeja, on December 12 to inform the bank of the unsuccessful transaction.

He said he filled out a form at the bank and was asked to return after five working days, which he did.

“When I went to the bank the second time, they said the payment had reached the FIRS and was successful at their end,” Imasagbon told FIJ.

He said he insisted that the payment’s status showed that it was unsuccessful because the FIRS had yet to receive it.

Seeing that he did not believe their report, the bank told him they would escalate the issue.

“They gave me a code and told me to follow up with different branches of GT Bank within Lagos, and I have been following up,” he said.

“I have visited the Abule-Egba branch, the Victoria Island branch and the Ikeja branch of GT Bank just to get my money, but to no avail.

“At a point, the officials of GT Bank at a branch in Ikeja told me to close the case because the bank had refunded the money.”

He said he was shocked at such a conclusion because while the matter was still being looked into, the bank gave a false report and closed the case.

He said the bank then lied, saying they sent a receipt to his email address when he made the payment. At the time, he said, no email address was linked to his account.

“I have requested a refund from GT Bank on many occasions, but the bank has done nothing, yet they closed the case,” Imasagbon said.

FIJ emailed GT Bank for comments on the issue, but over 72 hours after, the bank has not responded.
