Nurudeen Adetoro, an Ondo-based geography information systems (GIS) officer, has narrated to FIJ how N199,000 disappeared from his United Bank for Africa (UBA) account without authorisation.

Adetoro stated that he was with his family on March 17 when he got a notification that N199,000 had left his account for another UBA account.

“I was at a filling station with my family on the evening of March 17 when I received an SMS notification on my phone,” he told FIJ.

“The SMS notification read that N199,000 had been transferred from my account to one Opeyemi Elijah Odunayo, who is also a UBA customer.”

The GIS officer said when he visited the bank, an official told him the scammer had carried out the act by adding himself to his bank app.

“I contacted UBA’s customer care to block the account and also visited a branch of the bank in Obalende the following day,” he said.

“At the bank, an official confirmed the money was indeed sent into Odunayo’s account, and that he (Odunayo) added his Tecno mobile to my mobile app to withdraw my money.

“The customer care representative asked me to leave, and said they would reach out to me.”

Adetoro told FIJ that the bank didn’t reach out to him as promised, and when they did, they stated that they were not liable for his loss.

“On April 3, I heard nothing from UBA. I called them on April 4, and the customer care representative told me they were not liable for the unauthorised transaction,” he said.

“The bank is giving me this report with no evidence or explanation on how the person got my details or even got into my account.

“They know clearly that the problem is not at my end but theirs, but they would do anything to deny it. Ever since they promised to reach out, I have heard nothing from them. All they do is send me debit card renewal reminders.”

FIJ’s email to Nasir Ramon, the public relations officer of UBA, on Thursday had not been responded to at press time.
