Delta State Police has returned the sum of N50,000 extorted from Tega Paul by rogue police officers after FIJ’s report.

On Friday, August 27, FIJ had reported how Tega was stopped on the road by police officers and framed for having and transporting Viagra, a controlled drug in Nigeria.

Although all he had on him were vitamins, he was taken to a police station where he met a couple of other people who were being beaten and tortured.

To prevent similar treatment, Tega was asked to pay N50,000. The officers directed him to a POS, while holding on to his phone and car to ensure his return.

When Paul reported the extortion at the Delta State Police Headquarters, Asaba, they said they didn’t know the squad and the police station he had described.

However, inside his office on Wednesday, Bright Edafe, the command’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), apologised to Tega on behalf of the errant police officers and gave him the money.

“I visited the headquarters with fear, thinking I could be harassed,” Tega told FIJ. “But there was no negative action.”
