Ten months since the cancellation of a flight on February 3, Thelma Nwafor, a customer of Azman Air, has not got back her N120,000.

Azman Air cancelled its February 3 flight from Kaduna to Lagos State due to poor weather conditions, retrieving already shared boarding passes from passengers.

They encouraged passengers who wanted a refund to apply for one, and Nwafor, who was scheduled to be on that flight, applied as instructed.

Through a series of phone calls and emails, Nwafor contacted Azman Air to refund her money, and repeatedly, the airline assured her that it would review and process her request accordingly.

Suddenly, in April, its website shut down and phone lines stopped connecting. For months, it continued like this, Nwafor said.

“I have been calling and writing Azman Airline for months. They kept saying they would process it. Then after a while, their phone numbers stopped connecting, and their website was down for a long while until August,” she said.

“And even when they finally resumed operations, they said I should give them time to settle and they would refund my money.”

An August 3 memo from the airline to its staff revealed that they had shut down operations to convey their aircraft for C-checks.

Later on in October, Abdulmunaf Yunusa, the airline’s group chairman, said the aircraft were being returned to Nigeria and operations would commence immediately.

Despite this assurance, operations did not commence, and the airline has kept mum about making payments to customers owed.

Nwafor, who is a student of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, said she had bought a N120,000 ticket to make her sister’s wedding in Lagos and back but the airline disrupted her trip and held her money hostage.

The last time she contacted the airline was on December 15. It was a phone call, and the lines were out of reach.

On Friday, FIJ tried calling the phone number on the airline’s social media pages, but none of the calls connected.

Text messages sent to them on Instagram were not responded to either, and an email sent to them returned an error message.

Azman Air’s website is still down. However, its social media pages have posts as recent as September and November on Instagram and Facebook, respectively.

On November 27, the airline posted news about the re-election of Yunusa, its group chair, as president of the Airline Operators of Nigeria, yet no action has been taken to refund Nwafor’s money in 10 months.
