Amid the rising cost of living, a yet-to-be-identified soldier serving with the Nigerian Army has lamented how he can’t leave his station due to the inflated cost of transportation.

In a 24-second video shared on X by Chuks on Wednesday morning, the officer was heard saying he could not travel to be with his family after finding out that the cost of transportation was way more than his salary.

“Nigerian Army gave me a pass after serving for one year in Maiduguri today. They asked me to go home to see my family,” the soldier said in pidgin English.

“As I left the bush to arrive at the park, I heard that a bus to my town from here is now N35,000. I did my calculation and realised that I would spend N70,000 on transportation alone, while my salary for the month is only N50,000.

“I have no choice but to return to the bush.”

FIJ could not ascertain the officer’s rank from the video to verify his pay.

His outburst is coming amid Nigerians’ struggle with a steady rise in inflation.
