Lai Mohammed, the Minister of Information and Culture, has said certain conditions must be met to convince the Federal Government that there was a massacre at the Lekki Tollgate.

Speaking at a press conference held in Abuja on Tuesday, Mohammed insisted that the report submitted by the Lagos State Judicial Panel on Restitution for Victims of SARS Related Abuses and Other Matters, is fake.

He said the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government will not change its stand until “a well-investigated report of the incident that meets all required standards” is produced.

“There is absolutely nothing in the report that is circulating to make us change our stand that there was no massacre at Lekki on Oct. 20th, 2020,” he said. “The report in circulation does not meet those requirements.”

He also said: “It is untenable to say that some families did not come out because they are afraid. Any parent who is afraid to testify about the death of his or her child is not worthy to be called a parent.”

On November 15, the panel submitted a 309-page report to Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the Governor of Lagos State, admitting that soldiers shot live ammunition at armless protesters with the intention to kill and maim them.

Before then, the Minister had publicly said the Lekki Tollgate incident was a “massacre without bodies”.

However, one week after submitting its report, he said the panel did not provide enough evidence to prove there was a massacre at the tollgate.

“We reject the notion that our soldiers and policemen massacred innocent Nigerians at Lekki on Oct. 20th 2020. That conclusion is not supported by the weight of available evidence,” he said.

“Indictment for murder is a very serious issue that cannot be done on the basis of allegations and corroborations, as the panel did.”
