Akinyooye Azeez, a Regional Program Manager at a pharmaceutical company in Ibadan, has narrated how he was ambushed by an armed group comprising officers of the Nigeria Police Force and officers of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Azeez said he was driving in the Olusoji area of Oluyole, Ibadan, after dropping his kid in school around 8 am on Wednesday, when the security operatives in a Hummer car overtook him and forced him to stop his car.

“Heavily armed police officers and two guys approached my car,” he said. “They yelled that I come down and hand over my phone.”

After searching his phone rigorously, they handed it back with his ID they had seized and said he was not the one they were looking for.

“These guys did not apologise or explain why I was harassed. They forcefully took my phone before I could even gather my breath. They caused a scene obviously with serious hold-up. People were staring as they probably thought a fraudster had been apprehended,” he said.

“I couldn’t even drive my car off as everything happened in a flash. My heart had never beaten that fast in my life. What a morning I had. May Nigeria not happen to us.”

Reacting to the picture of the policeman on Twitter, Prince Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the force spokesperson, confirmed that the officers are members of the mobile police attached to EFCC in Ibadan.

Speaking with FIJ, the voice behind EFCC’s hotline said the commission does not conduct stop and search. He declined further comments, claiming the hotline is only for complaints.

The commission did not respond to a message sent to its email.
