Officers of the Lagos State Police Command will soon begin to wear an identity card wherever they go, FIJ can report.

Muyiwa Adejobi, the Lagos Police Public Relations Officer, revealed this to our reporter on Thursday afternoon via telephone.

“Today, I have written a memo to the Commissioner of Police that in Lagos State all police officers must start wearing a form of identity,” he said.

“People have complained to me that policemen putting on bulletproof vests are hiding under the usage of the vests to hide their numbers and identities and that doesn’t make any sense.

“Those who are not wearing the vest already have their names or numbers faded. It is unprofessional for police to be operating without having their names on them. It is not part of our tradition.”

As part of the plan to sanitize the Lagos Police Command, Adejobi added that he has proposed that the new form of identity will be a hangable pocket ID card showing the officer’s face, name and Force number.

In doing so, he emphasized that “every policeman on duty must hang the pocket ID.

“You will be able to see the face, know his/her  name and Force number,” he said.

“This is how we will be able to collectively hold all police officers in  Lagos accountable because a police without any clear identity has a privilege of misbehaving without being apprehended.”

“The Command is not relenting in sanitizing the system. This  is my initiative, which I believe the CP will approve.”

This development came one week after the Lagos State governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu equipped personnel of the Lagos State Traffic Management Agency (LASTMA), Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIO), Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI), among others, in the state with body cameras while on traffic regulatory duties in order to improve efficiency and reduce excesses of overzealous officers.
