President Muhammadu Buhari has on Thursday appointed Major-General Farouk Yahaya to succeed late General Ibrahim Attahiru as the new Chief of Army Staff.

Before his appointment as the COAS, General Yahaya was the General Officer Commanding 1 Division of the Nigerian Army and the Theatre Commander of the Operation Hadin Kai, a counter-terrorism and insurgency military outfit in the North East.

Yahya was announced as the new COAS in statement signed and released by military spokesperson Brigadier-General Onyema Nwachukwu.

His appointment comes days after the immediate past army chief, Ibrahim Attahiru, died in the crash of a military helicopter along with 10 other senior military officials.
