Shehu Sani, former senator representing Kaduna Central Constituency, has revealed that bandits blocked a part of the Kaduna-Abuja Road between Jere and Katari village on Friday.

Sani, who made the revelation in a tweet on Friday evening, said several road users had been kidnapped while others turned back in the face of gunshots.

“I have just got a call that bandits have blocked the Kaduna Abuja road, in between Jere and Katari village in this broad daylight,” he said. “Scores of people were kidnapped while many have made a fast u-turn in the face of gunshots.”

Nigeria has witnessed a surge in bandit attacks in recent times. The attackers known to be mostly Fulani Herdsmen have been killing and abducting citizens for ransom in several states across the country.

A revelation that over 150 people had been killed in Benue in the last seven days spurred widespread outrage on social media on Friday. Images of tens of dead people were widely shared, prompting the #BenueUnderAttack hashtag that topped Twitter trends in the morning.

Although the Federal Government led by Muhammadu Buhari has repeatedly promised to nip banditry in the bud, reports of deadly attacks keep coming from different corners in the country.
