Biodun Oyebamiji, the Governor of Ekiti State, has committed to a comprehensive treatment of 15-year-old Kemi Afolabi (not real name), who lost her left leg in an auto accident and has since been on admission at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Ido-Ekiti.

Afolabi was about to cross Usi road in front of Notre Dame Grammar School, Usi-Ekiti, on November 18, 2022, when a speeding car deflected from the road and knocked her down. Her left leg broke into two on the spot.

The governor informed Professor Adekunle Ajayi, the chief medical director of the hospital, that the state government would foot Afolabi’s entire medical bill and get her a prosthesis.

In a letter seen by FIJ, the governor asked the hospital to “continue with the treatment and rehabilitation” of the girl, including “procuring an artificial leg”.

Mary Omotosho, the senior special adviser on community communication to the governor, said Oyebanji was particular about the wellbeing of Ekiti people, and that when Afolabi’s situation came to his notice, it didn’t meet him unprepared, as he had dedicated a special fund to such issues.

“As a matter of principle, this is what the governor does even outside of public office. Looking at the girl, she is young, and the governor felt what she needs is a comprehensive treatment and rehabilitation,” Omotosho told FIJ on Monday.

“The governor does not want her to be treated shabbily and not have a fair chance to live well and pursue her aspirations after leaving the hospital.

“The hospital is in receipt of a letter to that effect and they asked to be given one week to furnish us with a detailed list of her needs.”

FIJ gathered that the hospital acknowledged the governor’s letter on March 10 at exactly 2:53 pm.

Adewale Olailo, the patient’s father, could not contain his happiness on the development. He thanked the governor for his help and wished him well in governing the state.

“We are all happy in my family for this intervention. I appreciate the governor and pray God will continue to be his guide in piloting the affairs of our state. As he has given us a reason to smile, happiness will not leave his home,” Olailo said.

He equally appreciated FIJ, saying, “Your organisation has done so well for me. I thank FIJ’s founder for generously reaching out to us. God will continue to elevate you.”

FIJ earlier reported how Afolabi was mowed down while standing by the roadside in November at the close of school in the afternoon.

Since the first report, FIJ has been following up her case and reporting every skirmish in the handling of her treatment, including total abandonment by the hospital.
