Haier Thermocool, an electronics manufacturing and distribution company, has repaired the faulty generating set belonging to an Abuja resident, who asked to be simply identified as Hassan, for free.

This development was confirmed to FIJ by Victor Arigu Nallah, one of Hassan’s employees, on Tuesday.

“After you published our story, two of the company’s officials called me on two separate occasions to tell me that I could come around to pick up the generator without paying a dime. They also told me that it had been repaired and was in good condition,” Nallah said.

“They further said that the matter that transpired between my boss, myself and Mr. Chinedu Okonkwo, the dealer who sold the generator to us, was quite unfortunate.

“They said the dealer had acted on his own when he insisted that we must pay him for the repairs, despite the fact that the generator had only spent a month with us after purchase. They said Thermocool would not ask any dealer to request for money for the repair of any newly-purchased equipment that is still under warranty.

“They apologised for his attitude and stressed that he was not one of their accredited dealers in Abuja. They also told me that necessary actions would still be taken on the matter to prevent a reoccurrence.

“I have now taken possession of the generator. Thank you FIJ, for all you do.”

On December 22, FIJ had reported how Chinedu Oliver Okonkwo, owner of Thermocool Edushines Electronics Ltd., ‘a major dealer in Thermocool products’, sold a generator to both Hassan and Nallah for N854,000.

During the transaction, Okonkwo also assured Hassan that the warranty issued to her was just a formality as the machine was expected to work for several years “without developing a single fault”.

After the generator had spent just a month and seven days with its new owners, it developed a fault and had to be taken back to Okonkwo for repairs.

The dealer would, however, refuse to repair the generator for free, insisting that that he would only resolve the issue without receiving any further payment if the receipt that was issued when the purchase was made was presented alongside the warranty that was made available.

Left with no choice than to leave the generator with Okonkwo, Hassan and Nallah returned home to fetch the receipt.

When the receipt was finally found, and by the time they (Hassan and Nallah) returned to Okonkwo’s office, the dealer said he had repaired the machine under the ‘work pay’ arrangement and that they would have to pay him N27,000 before it could be released to them.

When the owners refused to pay for the repair, Okonkwo held on to the generator for more than a month.
