The Court of Appeal in Abuja on Thursday reduced the jail term of Farouk Lawan, a former House of Representatives member, from seven to five years.
This follows the unanimous decision of a three-member bench led by Monica Dongban-Mensem, the court’s president, to reverse Lawan’s conviction for two of the three offences he was earlier jailed for, according to Premium Times.
In the unanimous judgment, the court nullified Lawan’s conviction on counts one and two, holding that the prosecution failed to prove both counts relating to demanding and agreeing to accept a $3m bribe from Femi Otedola, a businessman.
The court acquitted him on the first two counts, on which he was each sentenced to seven years. He was, however, convicted on count three on which he was sentenced to five years imprisonment.
In June 2021, Lawan had been convicted on three counts of soliciting bribes, agreeing to accept bribes and accepting the sum of $500,000 bribe from Otedola, by a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory.
