Following Sunday night’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) match, “dozens” of people were killed in a fire outbreak in Lekki, Lagos.

An eyewitness who spoke with FIJ stated that the incident happened at a ghetto in the area known as Salem.

“There was a fire incident at the ghetto in Salem, Ikate Lekki, last night during the AFCON Game,” he told FIJ.

“The fire was caused by a resident who forgot his food on fire and left to watch Nigeria’s game against Côte d’Ivoire,” he said.

“So far, a yet-to-be-determined number of people have died and about three ambulance vehicles have been in the vicinity to pick up the corpses.”

He stated further that the fire was aided by the wooden structures of the ghetto buildings.

“The number of casualties involved in the incident was aided by the wooden structures used to build houses in the ghetto area. This helped the fire spread rapidly.

“Also, a lot of people were already sleeping and could not escape from the incident.”

The Nigerian Super Eagles played against Côte d’Ivoire on Sunday night in an attempt to claim their fourth AFCON title. However, they lost to the Ivorians in a match that ended 2-1.
