Kate Osamor, the British-Nigerian Member of Parliament (MP) for Edmonton, a constituency in Greater London, United Kindgom, has been suspended by the Labour Party.

The suspension has, however, been described as a “racially motivated” move by Kingsley Abrams, a party activist.

According to The Voice UK on Friday, Abrams believes Osamor was deliberately targeted by the “powers that be” within the party, just as an allegation that black parliament members within the party were being constantly singled out and handed heavy punishments for no just cause rages on.

In late January, Osamor was suspended from the party after she described the situation in Gaza as genocide in a social media post to mark Holocaust Memorial Day.

“Tomorrow is Holocaust Memorial Day, an international day to remember the six million Jews murdered during the Holocaust, the millions of other people murdered under Nazi persecution of other groups and more recent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and now Gaza,” Osamor had written in her post.

The MP’s post led to a series of complaints from many interest groups, who described her message as anti-Semitic. The post was subsequently deleted, and Osamor issued an apology.

Despite Osamor’s decision to delete the post and publicly apologise, she was suspended by the Labour Party, pending an internal investigation.

“If elected to the NEC, I will fight for a swift and fair investigation, and for this decision to be reversed,” said Abrams.

“Labour’s decision to suspend the whip from Kate Osamor appalled me.

“Kate’s reference to Gaza as a genocide came just days after the International Court of Justice’s ruling that South Africa’s case that Israel’s war crimes may constitute genocide is ‘plausible’.

“Sadly, the failure of the party to implement to recommendations of the Forde report and ongoing racism in the party mean that black and Asian party members cannot have faith in the party’s disciplinary processes or decisions taken by the whips.”

If Osamor is not reinstated as a party member soon, she may stand as an independent MP in subsequent elections.
