The father of Dinal De Alwis, a 16-year-old schoolboy in the UK, recently shared how his son took his life in 2022 after being blackmailed by a Nigerian scammer.
Dinal had wanted to study at the University of Cambridge, but his hopes were dashed when the suspected Nigerian blackmailer contacted him via Snapchat. The blackmailer sent two nude photos of Dinal and threatened to send them to the student’s online followers unless he paid £100.

The teenager, fearing the worst, left his family home at 2:00 am and recorded a brief video of himself walking down a suburban street. His body was found an hour later.
When the South London Coroner’s Court conducted an inquest into the incident, it ruled Dinal’s death a suicide.
While speaking with the Daily Mail at the weekend, Kaushallya De Alwis, the father, said: “He messaged my wife and I to say he loved us, and he told his two brothers that he loves them, and said they need to ‘look after mum and dad’ “.
The father added: “His loss is the biggest possible loss. It is so incredibly painful. The fact that he ended his life in this way… the world is so cruel.”

Meanwhile, Daily Mail revealed that while the police and the National Crime Agency were unable to trace the blackmailer, they said that he appeared to have been operating from Nigeria.
Before he passed away, Dinal attended Whitgift School in Croydon, where he had straight A* grades in his GCSEs and had just begun sixth form.
