“How do you unsee a message with your friend’s corpse attached saying she went jogging and was hacked by hooligans? What in the madness is happening in this country?”
Those were the words of a Nigerian tweep, Nenkinan Deshi, after Chalya Joel, his friend and serving corps member in Kaduna State, was stabbed in the chest on Wednesday and subsequently died on the same day.
Findings by FIJ revealed that the incident happened in the Barnawa area of Kaduna during the corps member’s early morning jog.
“Yesterday (Wednesday) afternoon, I received a message with a picture of her corpse and a caption saying she had been killed while on morning jogging. I hit my head with my hand. Nigeria has done it again,” added @nenkinan_deshi.
Yesterday morning, my friend Chalya Joel uploaded her WhatsApp status thanking God for the gift of friends.

As seen in a post made by Meemahjacks, one of the deceased’s friends, Chalya was stabbed by three hoodlums on a motorcycle, who eventually went away with her phone.
Meanwhile, a post by @DatsokPhilip, another tweep, reveals that that was not the first time such incident would happen in Barnawa.
“Same Barnawa GRA, my cousin lost her life 17 years ago as a result of stabbing. Luckily, the culprits were arrested. I pray she finds rest, and may the culprits be apprehended,” wrote @DatsokPhilip.
FIJ made an attempt to reach out to Chalya’s friends, but no response had been received from them at press time.
Following the incident, the commissioner of police in Kaduna, Musa Yusuf Garba, ordered the Barnawa Divisional Police Officer and operatives to hunt for the killers of the corps member.
