Ehinomen Clement, a 35-year-old realtor, has accused police officers attached to Oko Centre Police Station in Benin City, Edo State, of extorting N1.066 million from him at gunpoint.

Clement told FIJ that he was traveling around Limit Road in the Benin City Government Reserved Area (GRA) on Saturday, when some armed men double-crossed him and ordered him to park his vehicle. The time was 1:50 pm.

He said he initially thought the armed men were robbers, only to realise they were police officers in mufti.

“The officers said they were passing by when they saw me. They claimed to have intelligence from Abuja, and that they monitored me and my conversations. When I asked them about the said conversations, they stated it was not my business because they were from the Inspector General of Police,” Clement told FIJ.

He said the officer later took him to Oko Centre Police Station, where they checked his phone, asked him what he did, and concluded that he was specialised in harvesting human organs. He said the officers brutalised him and locked him up in the cell.

“They asked how I got the car I drove, and I said it belonged to my father. But they said it was a lie. I was in the cell till 4:30 pm. Later, they drove me around the city, saying I had to pay them N30 million if I wanted to be free. Around 7:30 pm, they told me to pay N7 million. They asked me to call people on my contact list to contribute some money for me,” he said.

Clement said the officers took him to a PoS operator at Sapele Road and he transferred N1.066 million to the operator.

“An officer was slapping me while I discussed with the PoS operator. One of them collected my particulars. They asked me not to write any remarks while sending the money to the PoS operator. They threatened to take me to Abuja if I did not act according to their plan,” he said.

FIJ placed several calls to Bello Kotongs, the Edo State Police spokesperson, but his line was switched off. At press time, he had not responded to a text message sent to him.
