A Twitter user, who simply identified as Michael, has accused Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB) of failing to return N285,683.64 wrongfully deducted from his account in December.
Michael said he visited Mariott Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos, on December 17, 2021, and was asked to pay N285,683.64 with a credit card for a three-night accommodation.
On the first trial, he said, the payment was unsuccessful. Later, a member of the hotel staff brought a different PoS machine for him. When he used it, the transaction was successful. Meanwhile, GT Bank debited him for the first transaction too.

The following day, Michael called his account officer, but she said there was nothing she could do about it.
“I was so disgusted that I dropped the call. I complained about the issue on @gtbank_help, @gtbank mobile platform. I was so patient that I almost forgot about the money till someone asked me if they had resolved it,” he said.
“Immediately, I reached out to them on WhatsApp, hoping to have all this resolved, but there was no headway. On five different occasions, I visited the Magodo branch. On one visit, an ill-trained staff had the effrontery to send me back to Marriott. Again, I was calm.”
He said he called GTB several times, but they only blamed the hotel.

“It felt as though they were joking with my sanity. I trusted them. And they failed. Today, I’m yet to get any reasonable update from them. I have tried to report to the central bank, but it seems they are not getting my petition,” he said.
“You guys should better act quickly. Because the next time I walk into any branch, I’ll lose all sense of decency they trained me with. Please, I beg you; return my money so I can eat food.”
FIJ sent an email to GT Bank, but at press time, they had not responded to it.
