Four terrorists working with the Islamic State of the West African Province (ISWAP) have been killed by their own explosives.
An error occurred when the terrorists were planting the explosives on Wednesday, leading to their death.
Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency expert in the Lake Chad region, provided details of the accidental explosion on Thursday.
“At least four Islamic State of the West African Province (ISWAP) terrorists were killed by their own Improvised Explosive Device (IED) along San San Village in the North East of Mobbor in Borno State,” Makama posted on X.
“In a clear case that can be best described as a tactical boomerang, the terrorists’ bomb turned on them while they were planting it near the route of the troops of the 5 Brigade (sic) on Wednesday, shattering their bodies into pieces.”

According to Makama, the terrorists have been planting explosive devices at locations to put Nigerian soldiers in harm’s way.
The security expert referred to an instance where soldiers escaped an IED ambush orchestrated by terrorists on November 23.

“Troops of MNJTF Sector 4 deployed at Chetima Wongonu discovered an IED around Chetimari Village. Prior to the incident, suspected ISWAP terrorists opened fire in Chetimari at night, hoping to lure the troops into the IED. However, troops resisted and later discovered the IED at about 06:30 hrs and was subsequently detonated,” Makama wrote.
“…despite severe battlefield defeats and loss of territory, supplies and manpower, the insurgents had intensified the use of IEDs. The terrorists deployed PBIEDs (person-borne IEDs), VBIEDs (vehicle-borne IEDs), remote control and timed devices, in defensive positions or for ambushes.
“The tactical use of IEDs to defend enemy positions as well as ambush friendly and allied forces lines of communication is likely to continue and in some sectors become the only form of combat as Boko Haram becomes increasingly incapable of mounting major combat operations.”
