In a BBC Yoruba interview on Tuesday, Yomi Aliyu, one of his lawyers, said the rights activist developed the disease during his imprisonment in the Republic of Benin.

Igboho, he said, was dangerously ill and transported to the hospital for treatment.
“Igboho was not diagnosed with this ailment when he was arrested in Cotonou,” the lawyer said. “They had to rush him to the hospital since it was so serious.

“Even though I can’t determine which area of his body the sickness has actually damaged, I know it has to do with his internal organs.” I can’t tell if he’s been returned to prison from the hospital, but I do know he’s battling bad health and it appears his kidney and lungs are already being affected.
FIJ had reported how Igboho was arrested, alongside his wife, in Cotonou, Benin Republic, on July 16, 2021, on his way to Germany.
