Over the last week, there have been circulating WhatsApp messages indicating that Opay Microfinance Bank will fold. A screenshot of several messages advising customers to withdraw their money from the bank went viral on WhatsApp.

According to the yet-to-be-identified sender, a staff of the bank revealed an impending closure as the bank could no longer meet CBN requirements.

The texts read: “Please, if you know anyone that banks with Opay, warn them against immediate fold up. Opay staff just informed my hubby last night that they were about to pack up. They can no longer meet up with the CBN requirements, [and] they are allowed to tell only their families.

“They want to close this December, others go cry. I have told Bebe and Ebuka, I don’t know if your husband or any of his family members banks with them, please hit them up. Treat as urgent.”

FIJ found that this message was posted on several WhatsApp statuses over the past week, but while tracing its source, we were unable to independently verify who created the original message.

On Wednesday, FIJ called Adeyemi Adekunle, Opay’s public relations officer, and he said that the claim was false and the company was compliant with all CBN requirements.

He said the company had no plans of shutting down and had issued a disclaimer for the public to ignore the messages. FIJ found this disclaimer on the company’s social media pages.
