Esther Udoh Rejoice, a Lagos-based lady, slightly escaped blindness on Wednesday after a ruthless official of the Lagos State Transport Management Agency (LASTMA), simply identified as Kehinde, broke a side mirror of the bus she boarded.

Pieces of the broken mirror pierced the white part of one of Rejoice’s eye balls and caused a heavy flow of blood.

Rejoice was on a yellow bus bound for Mushin, Lagos, when a driver drove past recklessly to escape a traffic delay.

“We were still venting out anger on the driver, asking him why he would overtake, when a LASTMA officer emerged and used a stick to break our side mirror,” she told FIJ.

“Before I could know what was going on, there were scattered glasses in the bus and I became the unfortunate one among the passengers. Blood and water were flowing from the cut on the sclera.”

“When I went for a check last night, I was referred to the Lagos State Teaching Hospital University (LUTH) from one hospital. The doctor told me I was lucky it did not touch my corneal, but my sclera was injured. According to him, I just escaped blindness.”

Rejoice told FIJ she would have to undergo surgery to fix the eye, and she was not yet sure of the amount that would cost her.

Kehinde and Olumide Filade, LASTMA spokesperson, did not respond to calls. They also did not respond to text messages sent to them.
