Following the Department of State Services (DSS) alert on an interim government plot, members of the House of Representatives, on Tuesday, moved and passed a motion they said was of urgent national importance.
In a press release posted on their official Twitter handle, the lawmakers were said to have “appealed to parties not satisfied with the outcomes of the 2023 general elections to patiently allow the judicial process to take its full course”.

While the motion was not explicitly identified, Unyime Idem, the lawmaker representing Oruk Anam/Ukanafun Federal Constituency, was said to have moved the motion.
Idem was quoted as saying that an interim government was “unknown to democracy and our laws,” and that it was “not something that we should support, especially given that our democracy is a young one”.
“The judiciary is the only organ empowered by law to adjudicate on post-election matters,” he said.
Jimoh Ibrahim and Ademorin Kuye, legislators representing Lagos State; Sada Soli Jibia, a representative from Kaduna State; and Julius Ihonvbere of Edo State were among those who supported the motion.

Lawmakers Ossai Nicholas Ossai and Sergius Ose-Ogun from Delta and Edo states respectively, however, dissented from the motion.
Ose-Ogun questioned the DSS’ actions, saying, “How can you wake up and tell us that some people want to derail democracy, yet you have not arrested or named the suspects?”
Ossai argued that the DSS alert was speculative, adding that the legislature should not be party to speculations or rumours.
The motion was, however, passed, as those who opposed it were in the minority.
Ahmed Idris Wase, the Deputy Speaker, presided over the plenary.
