Timi Edun, a Nigerian corporate lawyer living in British Columbia, Canada, is about to lose a significant job opportunity over the Nigerian Embassy’s failure to renew his passport for over three months.

Edun narrated his ordeal in an X thread written as an open letter on Wednesday.

“I am deeply disappointed by the unfortunate situation I am facing with my passport renewal process at the Nigerian High Commission, Ottawa. As per the requirements, I submitted my old passport and expected to receive a new one by mail following the correction I was told to do to my NIN. However, it has been over three months since I made the application, and unfortunately, I have not yet received my new passport,” Edun wrote on Wednesday.

“Despite the Nigeria immigration passport tracker indicating that my passport has been produced, I have been left in a state of worry and uncertainty. I have reached out to the embassy numerous times via email, explaining my desperate situation and how I am currently stranded without my passport.

“Regrettably, I have not received any concrete response or any indication that my concerns are being addressed. Additionally, my attempts to seek help through phone calls have also yielded no results.

“The consequences of this delay extend far beyond inconvenience. I am now on the verge of losing a significant job opportunity that I have been diligently pursuing here in Canada.

“My potential employer is requesting for my Work Visa, which I cannot apply for without my passport. It is disheartening to find myself in a position where all my efforts in searching for employment are at risk due to this prolonged passport issue.”

Edun tagged Adeyinka Asekun, the Honourable High Commissioner; Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the Minister of Interior; and Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the National Diaspora Commission (NiDCom) chairperson on X.

The Nigerian lawyer said that he eventually had to resort to a public address because of the urgency of his situation and the frustration he had been experiencing for months.
