Hage Gottfried Geingob, the President of Namibia, is dead. He was 82.
Nangolo Mbumba, the nation’s vice president, announced this in the wee hours of Sunday.
Geingob, who had been receiving medical treatment in the capital, Windhoek, died in the presence of his wife, Madame Monica Geingos, and his children, according to a statement by Mbumba.

The 82-year-old leader had publicly disclosed his cancer diagnosis last month and planned to undergo treatment in the United States. His office stated his intention to return to Namibia on February 2.
Geingob, who assumed the presidency in 2015, was in his second and final term in office. He was the third president of Namibia.
Geingob held the position of Namibia’s inaugural prime minister from 1990 to 2002 and returned to serve another term from 2012 to 2015. During the interim period from 2008 to 2012, he assumed the role of the country’s minister of trade and industry.

As revealed in 2014, Geingob was a prostate cancer survivor.
Namibia will hold presidential and parliamentary elections in November. The ruling Swapo Party, which has been in power since the country’s independence in 1990, is going to the polls with Nandi-Ndaitwah.
Currently serving as Namibia’s deputy prime minister, Nandi-Ndaitwah will become the nation’s first female president if successful in the upcoming elections.
