The Global Peace Index, an annual report produced by the Institute for Economics and Peace, Sydney, Australia, has ranked Nigeria as the 144th most peaceful country in the world.
The 17th edition of the report ranked Iceland as the most peaceful country in the world. It also recognised Denmark and Ireland as the second and third most peaceful countries in the world respectively.
Other countries that made the report’s top 10 most peaceful countries in the world are New Zealand, Austria, Singapore, Portugal, Slovenia, Japan and Switzerland.

Nigeria is currently in the 144th position, a step behind Israel and a step ahead of Myanmar.
Ukraine and Russia currently occupy 156th and 157th positions respectively on the list. Afghanistan is at the bottom as the least peaceful country in the world.
The report also identified Botswana as the most peaceful country in Africa and 42nd in the world. Closely following Botswana as Africa’s most peaceful countries are Sierra Leone and Ghana, and they are 47th and 51st respectively on the world list.
The report, highly regarded as the world’s leading measure of peacefulness, revealed that the average level of global peacefulness deteriorated for the ninth consecutive year, with 84 countries recording an improvement and 79 recording deterioration.

The index annually presents the most comprehensive data-driven analysis on trends in peace, countries’ economic values and how to develop peaceful societies.
The Global Peace Index covers 99.7 percent of the world’s population. It is calculated using 23 qualitative and quantitative indicators from highly respected sources, and it measures the state of peace across three domains.
The domains are countries’ level of societal safety and security, the extent of ongoing domestic and international conflict and the degree of militarisation
