Garuba Galumje, an Indian-based Nigerian, has been arrested by police in India for defrauding at least 300 women after falsely promising them marriage.

According to Hindustan Times, Galumje befriended the women through social media and matrimonial websites. He would also always make them believe he was Sanjay Singh, an Indian man living in Canada.

The police in South Delhi confirmed that the 38-year-old Nigerian had, through his scheme, defrauded the women of millions of rupees.

“The accused has been arrested in connection with a complaint from a woman who lives in Meerut district of UP. She claimed that she had registered herself on Jeevansathi website for marriage,” said Reeta Yadav, the police head of cyber crime in Delhi.

“A man approached her through the website and introduced himself as Sanjay Singh, an Indian resident in Canada.

“The man eventually gained her confidence and made emotional appeals as he tricked her into transferring ₹60 lakh (N300,000) in multiple instalments into his various bank accounts before she later realised he was a fraud.”

After Galumje’s arrest, the police later discovered that had been operating from Delhi all the while.

“During questioning, we came across multiple similar cases involving Galumje. There are over 300 women who he had targeted through various popular websites and cheated of crores. On social media and matrimonial websites, he used profile pictures of smart-looking men and not his own in order to dupe women,” Yadav said.

The police chief also added that Galumje first came to India in February 2019 on a six-month visa, and with an intention to trade in human hair and readymade garments.

Galumje would again come to India on March 18 on a medical visa but decided not to return to Nigeria after it expired in May.
