Bethel Ikenna Chimezie, a Nigerian living in Guyana, a country on South America’s North Atlantic coast, has been shot while attempting to forcefully gain entrance into the country’s president’s residence.
According to the Jamaica Observer, the 35-year-old Nigerian, who works at a cleaning service firm, walked into the state house, situated in Georgetown, the Guyanese capital, on Thursday, and demanded to speak with the president.
When the security guards manning the residence would not allow him gain entrance, he drew out a knife and stabbed a security guard five times in the neck and other body parts.

Chimezie then reportedly grabbed another guard’s service pistol and fired several rounds at the men guarding the residence.
The guards were said to have returned fire, injuring Chimezie in the head, torso and leg.
After the incident, Wendell Blanhum, a deputy police commissioner in the country, said the Guyanese force had asked the INTERPOL for a comprehensive background check on Chimezie to confirm whether he had any criminal history, or whether he was linked to any criminal group.
The Nigerian is said to be unconscious even after undergoing a surgery as a result of the injuries he sustained.
Imaan Ali, Guyana’s president, was said to have visited the injured guard at the hospital.
Meanwhile, the country’s police are yet to make the reason behind Chimezie’s attack known to the public.
