For years, successive governments have continued to find ways to stem Nigeria’s insecurity by increasing military and intelligence funding and even achieving some success.

Still, Nigeria’s people continue to suffer attacks and violent killings at the hands of both state and non-state actors. Here are some of the worst attacks in 2022:

Zamfara Massacre – January 4-6: Over 200 people were reported dead following terrorist attacks on Zamfara’s Kurfa Danya, Kurfa Magaji Rafin Gero, Tungar Isa, and Barayar Zaki in the Bukkuyum and Anka local government areas.

The attacks came after military air raids on terrorist hideouts the previous week. Locals reported that the terrorists shot at anyone on sight, looted and burned their homes.

Zamfara Attack – February 18: Eighteen persons were killed in a bandit attack on Zamfara State’s Anka Local Government Area.

The attack was foisted on Kadaddaba community and was said to have lasted six hours, from 10 pm to 4 am. The bandits “conducted a house-to-house search, collecting money, foodstuff and domestic animals,” a source told Premium Times.

Kebbi State Vigilantes Attack – March 6: At least 60 members of Yan Sa Kai, a vigilante group in Kebbi State were killed in a terrorist attack.

The group had planned an attack on bandits but were tipped off, giving the bandits room to ambush and attack them.

Abuja-Kaduna Train Attack – March 28: Bandits ambushed and attacked train heading from Kaduna to Abuja, killing eight passengers and abducting several others whom have now been released.

They had blown the rail tracks with bombs, after which they reportedly started shooting at the train, gaining control and abducting 61 passengers.

Plateau Massacre – April 10: Over 100 people were reportedly killed, and houses were razed in Jos’ Wase and Kanam local government areas.

The bandits were reported to have swept through the communities with bikes, targeting only men, and according to locals, burned houses selectively.

Murder of Pregnant Woman, Four Children in Anambra State – May 22: In Isulo, Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State, gunmen massacred 10 people, including Harira Jubril, a pregnant woman, and her four children.

Jubril was nine months pregnant and returning from visiting family members in a neighbouring community with her four children when the gunmen attacked.

Owo Massacre – June 5: Mass shootings and a bomb attack on the St. Francis Catholic Church in Owo, Ondo State, claimed the lives of at least 40 people and left several others injured.

The gunmen stormed into the church premise just as Mass was ending, shooting everyone they saw on sight before fleeing the area unperturbed.

Kuje Prison Attack – July 5: Six prisoners and one security guard were killed in a suspected Boko Haram attack on the Kuje Correctional Centre, freeing over 600 prisoners.

All terrorist and bandit inmates in the facility were said to have fled during the attack. Bashir Magashi, Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, said the terrorists came in large numbers and struck around 10:30 pm.

Herdsmen Attack in Benue – October 19: Suspected armed Fulani herdsmen set siege to Gbeji town in Benue State’s Ukum Local Government Area, killing numerous people. At least 36 corpses were recovered, with many more reportedly still missing.

Wale Abbas, Benue State’s commissioner of policee, told ThisDay that the attacks were reprisal attacks coordinated by herdsmen whose kinsmen had been slain in clashes between the border villages of Benue and Taraba states.

Southern Kaduna Attacks – December 18: Over 28 persons were reportedly slain by terrorists in separate attacks in Malagum 1 and Sokwong towns in the Kaura Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

Seven people were reportedly killed in Sokwong town and 21 in Malagum 1 community.
