The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has barred some of its corps members in the Ikeja I, Local Government area of Lagos from conducting their monthly clearance for failing to register with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has ad hoc staff.

FIJ gathered that corps members who failed to present the registration slip from the electoral website were denied from submitting their biometrics for the November clearance.

Corps members who spoke with FIJ anonymously on Thursday stated that it was a ‘no INEC slip, no clearance’ policy at the Ikeja 1, local government area.

“The INEC ad hoc registration is compulsory, as corps members would not be cleared without it,” a corps member told FIJ.

“You won’t be cleared without it. You could even be asked to return next week. It is a ‘no INEC slip, no clearance policy’.

“We are being forced to register for the INEC ad hoc duty, lest we risk November clearance,” another said.

FIJ understands that as a result of the compulsion corps members serving in the local government resorted to forging the document for N500 in a bid to be cleared for November.

A message shared on the local government’s Whatsapp group and seen by FIJ revealed that the exercise was optional and only interested corps members should register.

FIJ called Adeshola Sanni, the local government inspector of Ikeja 1, who denied that such was happening in her local government.

“What you heard is not true and should not be believed,” she said. “You can come down to the local government to confirm yourself as clearance is currently ongoing.”

However, a source confirmed to FIJ that moments after our reporter called the LGI, she announced that the INEC registration was no longer compulsory as not everyone who registered would be selected.

FIJ also contacted Eddy Megwa, the public relations officer of the youth service scheme, who promised to investigate the issue.

“Thank you. I will look into it immediately,” he said.
