Fashina Olamide, an undergraduate, has narrated how OPay failed to unlock his previous wallet despite weeks of correspondence and promises.
Olamide told FIJ that he misplaced his phone in September and had been trying to recover his OPay account with a balance of N31,000. He spent the whole of October speaking with OPay, but the company wouldn’t help him out.
“I lost my phone and the phone number too. When I reached out to OPay, they told me how to recover my previous account. I got all the documents ready and started calling them,” Olamide told FIJ on Wednesday.

“Those calls to OPay took a lot of time and resources. I was told to open a new OPay account and upgrade it to tier 3. The contact centre always told me to wait 48 hours each time I called OPay to ask for an update.
“OPay asked me to send my personal details, my email address and an affidavit. They also collected copies of my ID card and utility bill. I waited a long while and sent messages to OPay’s social media account, but they only asked for more time. It’s been over a month now, and I cannot access my former OPay account and the money in it.”

Olamide told FIJ that he sent emails and reminders to OPay but the fintech company kept dragging its feet.
“My previous account is logged out and they keep telling me to do the same thing over again. OPay said that they would have to transfer the N31,000 balance from the old account to my new account,” Olamide explained.
FIJ sent a message to OPay’s Twitter account and official email address, but there was no response at press time.
