Sola Afolabi, a police officer attached to the Dugbe Police Station in Osogbo, Osun State, has reneged on his promise to repay N50,000 monthly to Oluwadamilola Babatunde, the Lagos-based phone vendor he extorted N660,000 from between May and June.

Babatunde told FIJ that in July, he visited Yemisi Opalola, the Osun State Police Public Relations Officer, and Akinloye Oyegade, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of the station where Afolabi works, to know how to get his money back.

During the visit, Afolabi repaid N150,000 to the vendor immediately and also promised a payment of N50,000 at the end of every month till Babatunde got his N660,000 back.

When Babatunde did not hear from the policeman at the end of July as he had promised, he reached out to him. During their conversation, Afolabi said he was not aware he was to start the repayment in July.

When FIJ contacted Oyegade, Afolabi’s superior, to ask if he was aware of the development, he refused to comment.

When Afolabi was contacted, he said he thought the repayment would commence at the end of August.

“I did not know I was supposed to start paying in July,” he told FIJ.

“I gave him N150,000 and I said I would be paying N50,000 every month until it was complete, but I will pay N100,000 this month since I did not pay in July.”

When FIJ asked what day he intended to resume repayment, he said he was relied on his salary.

In July, FIJ reported how Afolabi extorted N660,000 from Babatunde and one Francis Akuenu, his friend.

After the men were falsely accused of burglary and phone theft in Osun, they were transported to Dugbe Station and made to part with the sum.
