Residents of the unsettled Bokkos Local Government Area in Plateau State have received warnings of a potential follow-up attack by “Fulani terrorists”.

A message circulating on WhatsApp and obtained by FIJ indicates that the LGA may face a more severe assault than the one experienced on December 24.

“Reports coming in have it that Bokkos LGA will come under more severe attacks than the one witnessed during the Yuletide. There is a massive influx of Fulani Malitia from Bauchi and Nassarawa. The main target is Mangu, but their operational base is Bokkos. All Plateau people should be on alert,” the shared WhatsApp message reads.

A source in Butura Kampani, a village in Bokkos, said that she got the message at dawn and found that many people had seen the same message and were panicking.

“It is no longer news that they might attack. Everyone knows that here. It’s what we’ve been hearing, so people are preparing to counter their attacks. Not everyone will run away. I won’t,” she told FIJ.

Another source in Kuba, a village in Bokkos, told FIJ that he learned that the LGA might be attacked without warning by the same group of terrorists who attacked many parts of the area on December 24.

“We don’t know when, but I think they will come for us,” he told FIJ.

FIJ called Onyema Nwachukwu, the Nigerian Army’s spokesperson, for comments on the matter, but he did not respond. A text sent to him at press time had not been responded to.

When FIJ called the Nigerian Army via the phone number displayed on its Facebook page, a respondent said they were going to take note of it.

Before now, many Plateau residents accused the Nigerian Army of letting them down by failing to take proactive measures to protect them after news of attacks arose. FIJ reported about Plateau communities where the army helps killer herdsmen.
