Rehan Staton, a former refuse collector at Harvard Law School, will graduate as a lawyer from the prestigious American school in May.
According to the Washington Post, Staton was encouraged to apply to the school in 2020 by fellow refuse collectors who believed he was brilliant enough to earn a college degree.
When he secured admission to study law at the school, he continued hauling refuse at daybreak before rushing to attend classes.
He would sometimes attend classes in his yellow uniform during periods he knew he would be late if he chose to first have a bath.

When in uniform, he would sit at the back of the lecture hall to try to avoid inevitable glares and judgment from his peers.
“I remember what it’s like working that type of job,” said Staton, adding that his father and brother were also sanitation workers.
He also said that his family struggled financially, sometimes without electricity and with no food at home.
Presently, Staton is focused on giving something back, specifically to the law school’s janitors, electricians, custodians and food service workers as a show of appreciation for their daily efforts in helping the school run smoothly.

In doing this, he used his savings from a summer job as an associate at a law office to purchase 100 Amazon gift cards to distribute to support staffers around the school.
In addition, Staton, through The Reciprocity Effect, an initiative he recently founded, also engaged fellow students in a fundraiser and realised $70,000.
The realised donation is to be used in helping refuse collectors who are in the same position he was a few years back.
