Students of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic have accused the Ondo State command of the Western Nigeria Security Network (WNSN), also known as the Amotekun Corps, of killing Alayori Ademola, an ND 1 student of the institution.
According to a press statement released by the polytechnic’s student union on Friday, Ademola was shot in the thigh and stomach by officers of the Amotekun Corps who invaded his compound in search of criminals on June 27, leading to his death.

“The callous and devious events that played after the invasion points to a failed cover up by security operatives who swore to protect lives and properties of inhabitants of Ondo State,” the statement read in part.
“After he was shot, Amotekun took Alayori to a local herbalist for extraction of bullet pellets lodged in his thighs and stomach but ended up abandoning him there.
“Alayori’s mother was denied access to him until his health worsened and he was referred to a hospital that is better referred to as a quack. In his failed attempts to resuscitate Ademola’s health, the quack doctor poured petrol in a burning fire.
“Seeing Alayori’s case was getting out of hand, he quickly sent him to Federal Medical Centre, Owo, where he later died. The bullets had eaten up his intestines and severely damaged his liver.
“Whilst it is not within our rights to pass an immediate judgement on this unfortunate event, we have been left to rue why Amotekun would firstly attack a students’ hostel and fire live ammunition at unarmed students.

“It is also baffling that a herbalist was preferred as the first aid for a gunshot victim. We wonder why the Corp has been inconsistent in their explanations of what really transpired on that fateful day.”
The students also said the corps is fast deteriorating into an agency that harasses and murders citizens in Ondo State.
“However, the organisation must express utter disgust in the handling of the case by the Amotekun Corps. Aside abandoning Alayori for his mother and immediate family to cater for his hospital bills, the watery explanations that connotes a cover up is regrettable and saddening.
“This unprofessional and obvious exhibition of crass ineffectiveness, unfortunately, seem to be the modus operandi of the corps in Ondo State. The corps seems to have forgotten why it was created and is now turning into an extortion unit, arbitrator and road wardens. They have forgotten, ‘Amotekun ni gbogbo wa!'”
When FIJ contacted the Amotekun office in Ondo State, an official promised to link our reporter with the spokesperson, but he had not done so at press time.
