The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has announced that it has Ameerah Sufyan in its custody.

In a statement signed by Oduniyi Omotayo, deputy public relations officer of the command, and releasesed on Friday, the police claimed that Sufyan was not kidnapped by armed men in police uniform.

FCT Police Command wishes to categorically debunk the viral news of the alleged kidnapping of one Safiyanu Amira and seventeen (17) others who were reportedly abducted at gunpoint by armed men in police uniform on Tuesday, 14th June 2022, at about 1:00 pm, and to state that Safiyanu Amira is currently safe in police custody,” the statement read in part.

“While she is currently in the hospital receiving medical attention as demanded by global best practices, the investigation continues and findings will be communicated subsequently.”

Sufyan had made a distress call on Twitter claiming she had been abducted at gunpoint with 16 other persons from different locations within Abuja on Tuesday.

In the tweet, Sufyan wrote: “We were abducted by people with police uniforms and a van from our houses from different parts of Abuja”.

Sufyan said that her abductors include four Yoruba men and two Fulani men. She also claimed that the armed men in police uniform planned to transport her and the others to different locations.

FIJ called Muyiwa Adejobi, Police Public Relations Officer, and he confirmed that Ameerah is in police custody.

“We have found Ameerah and we have some suspicions about her case and the alert she broadcast,” Adejobi said.

“So, we have some questions to ask. The police will need to carry out some findings so that we can have accurate facts about her claim and have good judgment about the scenario.

“We did not record any kidnap of 17 people; it’s not on record.”
