The management of the Federal Government College Kwali, Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, has asked students to vacate its hostels two days earlier than its planned Wednesday vacation.

FIJ learned from a source whose child attends the school that an abduction attempt was foiled by police officers attached to the Kwali Divisional Police Station, and that the terrorists involved promised to return.

This prompted the management to contact the guardians of all pupils to come withdraw their wards for an end of term vacation on Monday, despite its academic calendar indicating vacation begins on Wednesday, according to the source.

“The attackers could not successfully kidnap anyone from the school,” he said. “The management fears that the attackers would return to attack the school a second time, so everyone packed their baggage and left the school.”

When FIJ contacted the school via a telephone number listed on its website, a man who did not give his name, referred our reporter to the Ministry of Education.

While he confirmed a shooting, he said there was no abduction attempt on the school.

“There was a shooting between Saturday night and early Sunday morning. It was not in the school but a village close to the school,” he told FIJ. “All the students who have finished their exams have been asked to vacate the school as we have no reasons to keep them.”

“The ones still writing their National Examination Council (NECO) Senior School Certificate Examinations (SSCE) are still in school.”

FIJ made a call to Josephine Adeh, the spokesperson of the Abuja Police Command for comments, but she did not answer it. At press time, she had not responded to a text message sent to her.
