03.12.2023 Featured TIMELINE: 83 Corps Members Abducted in 10 Years — 40 in Rivers Alone

Published 3rd Dec, 2023

By Timileyin Akinmoyeje

It’s been almost four months since eight members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) were abducted en route to Sokoto on August 17. In September, the NYSC announced the freedom of three of the victims.

On October 3, however, the families of the victims refuted the news of the release in a report by Vanguard newspaper.

The controversy and the apparent lack of a practical solution have sparked concerns about the relevance of the scheme, especially in the face of daunting insecurity. These concerns may not be entirely unfounded, considering the trend of kidnappings that have trailed the NYSC.

In the last five years, the frequency of corps member kidnaps increased drastically compared to previous years. Sixty-three out of the 83 victims were reported kidnapped between 2018 and 2023 alone.
