Tijani Aderemi, a Twitter user, has narrated how police officers attached to Meiran Police Station in Lagos beat Ayo, his friend and Uber driver, to a pulp on Friday.
In a series of tweets, he said he received a call on Friday that Ayo was in the hospital following an encounter with some police officers.
The officers had asked Ayo to stop for a search at Iyana-Ekoro road in Meiran and he did as instructed, according to Aderemi. But one of the police officers called him “stupid” while conversing with him.
He said Ayo told the police officer that he was not stupid. In annoyance, the officer pushed him, and he returned the gesture. This was the beginning of Ayo’s ordeal.

“Other police officers joined in to beat him to a pulp. Later, they took him to Ile-Iwe Police Station. It was his rider who covered the ugly incident while begging them to leave him alone,” Aderemi said.
In one of the videos attached to Aderemi’s post, his passenger, identified as Chisom, pleads with the officers not to beat Ayo. Chisom says some police officers told the driver to step out of his car and open his boot.
“He opened his boot and got out of his car. Then one man said he was stupid. But he said, ‘I am not stupid.’ That was all he said. This man came and slapped him on his cheek,” she says.
“Because you are carrying a gun doesn’t mean we should fear you. He said he was not stupid. Is it a bad thing? Did he insult you? What is wrong with the system?”
Seeing how things escalated, Chisom called an influential police officer. After he spoke to the men, they pleaded with her to book a ride and go home. But she insisted she would not leave without her driver.

“I have to take him along with me or know he is safe. Take me to the station,” she said.
“They drove me, and I called whom I called earlier and put it on speaker. Then the person threatened them. When they realised he was stronger, they started begging me. I told them I wanted to see their DPO. When their DPO saw the videos, he begged me.”
FIJ contacted CSP Adekunle Ajisebutu, the Lagos State Police spokesperson, but he did not answer his calls. At press time, he had not responded to a text sent to him.
