12.10.2022 Featured Why iPhone 14s Are Sending False Car Crash Alarms to Emergency Authorities

The iPhone 14 has been sending automated calls to notify local emergency authorities of car crashes that never happened.

The somewhat inconveniencing messages have been sent out by several iPhone 14 models since they were released into the market on September 16.

Recently, an audio obtained by the Wall Street Journal revealed the moment an iPhone 14 pro sent the following message to emergency authorities:

“The owner of this iPhone was in a severe car crash and is not responding to their phone.”

Similar emergency messages were received from other iPhone 14 models after their owners had taken them along while on roller coaster rides at amusement parks.

An Apple spokesperson once said that the iPhone 14’s Crash Detection feature “is extremely accurate in detecting severe crashes”. But now, it has been established that the phone misdiagnoses the fits and swings of roller coaster rides as car accidents.

The controversial feature is exclusive to iPhone 14 models and the Apple Watch Series 8. It was originally designed to help users reach out to emergency personnel as soon as possible.

“The feature calculates by using an axis gyroscope and high G-force accelerometer to detect four main types of crashes: front, side, rear-end and rollover crashes,” CNet explained.

“If the sensors detect an impact, the feature will automatically connect the person wearing it to emergency services. If the wearer doesn’t dismiss the call within 20 seconds, an audio message informs emergency services of the crash and provides its location.”

To prevent false alarms from impacting the efficiency of emergency response teams, users of the iPhone 14 and Apple Watch Series 8 are advised to board roller coasters with their phones on airplane/flight mode.
