Police officers attached to the Nigeria Police Divisional Headquarters, Ipetumodu, Osun State, have arrested and detained a road user over a tinted glass permit issued by the Lagos State Police Command.

The motorist was travelling along the Ife-Ibadan Expressway on Wednesday when he was stopped by police officers who asked for his car documents.

“After seeing the documents, they said the tinted glass permit was fake, and then they moved me to their station. This is a document issued by the police in Abuja in February 2018,” he told FIJ.

The driver said he originally had tinted permit from the police in Surulere, Lagos, in 2014 but was stopped by highway policemen in early 2018 and told that his biometric data was not properly entered in the first tinted window permit, prompting him to walk into a police station in Abuja for another one.

“The first one was issued in Lagos,” he said. “I was driving on the highway when police officers stopped me. On checking my tinted permit, they said the biometrics were not well captured and that I should get another one.

“I walked into a police station in Abuja myself; it’s not as if I paid someone to do it for me. I was asked for my photo and I paid about N15,000 for another document. I made the payment myself. This is the same document Osun policemen are now saying is fake.”

The road user said the three policemen who arrested him and brought him to the station all covered their uniforms with sweaters, so it was impossible to see their name tags. However, he identified the officer he was handed over to as Joseph Oguntayo, and the SO has Mr. Irewole.

There have been several cases of rogue police officers capitalising on tinted permit to extort money from motorists. In May, a video of a police officer threatening to confiscate a vehicle if the owner refused to part with an undisclosed amount for tinting his car without permit went viral on Twitter.
