Adedayo Adeoba, a PoS vendor, has accused Access Bank of making his account vulnerable to unauthorized deductions by SportyPay, a fraudulent online platform.

Adeoba, who lost a total of N299,989 to SportyPay on December 27, said he transferred N300,000 to his Access Bank account on the same day so he could withdraw from the branch close to his home. But on getting to the bank, he found a crowd at the ATM, so he left the bank for another.

“When I got to the second Access Bank branch, I used their ATM and the screen screamed ‘insufficient balance’. At first glance, I interpreted it to mean the ATM was temporarily unable to dispense cash. But on checking my account balance, I saw only N2,000 out of over N300,000,” he told FIJ.

“I immediately called Access Bank customer care, but they said my card details must have been compromised. I disagreed. I have never used my card online and I opened the account in November, so, how come?”

When Adeoba checked his notifications, he discovered that SportyPay was the recipient of his money.

On Wednesday, he went to an Access Bank branch in Ikotun to register his displeasure, telling the worker who attended to him that he needed his money back. He went with a written piece, but he was told to rather complain orally.

Two hours after he had complained to the bank, he saw a credit alert of N43,000. He went back to tell them he lost more than what they had credited him, but the attendant told him nothing more could be done.

“She said I was lucky to have got N43,000 back. She asked me to be happy, saying that my card had been compromised. I didn’t like that statement because I had not used the card for anything except to withdraw,” he said.

When FIJ contacted Abdul Imoyo, Access Bank public relations officer, he asked that Adeoba’s account number be sent to him. He also promised to look into the matter on Monday.
