Olushola Aromokun, a Twitter user, has accused an attendant of Conoil Petrol Station, Surulere, Lagos, of extorting customers before selling to them.
According to Aromokun, the attendant had compelled him to pay N1000 before being taken care of.
Responding to Aromokun’s claim, Sarkilu, another Twitter user, narrated how an attendant collected N500 for gas worth N5000, and N1000 for a full tank in an unnamed fuel station.
Lawrence Nkem, a Facebook user, also claimed to have had a similar experience.
“Forte Oil and NNPC on Bajulaye Road, Shomolu, are misbehaving. Touts are extorting car owners and keg buyers. Cars are queued at the gate. The gate is closed, only allowing people with kegs. When you want to enter, you must pay the touts N100. It’s an open thing,” he said.
Capitalising on Scarcity, NNPC Station Takes Bribes to Sell Fuel
In a video seen by FIJ, officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) instruct a petrol attendant to return the pump price to N165. The men had stormed Toplad fuel station at an unidentified area.
“I am speaking on behalf of the Federal Government of Nigeria,” says an officer. “PMS is N165 and there is no scarcity of fuel. If anybody sells beyond N165, report to NSCDC. We have been directed by our director general to go out. No increase of fuel price.”
FIJ earlier reported how petrol stations were extorting customers in Lagos, taking advantage of the ongoing fuel shortage in the country.
